Cineflix’s Mayday Takes Flight with the 100th Episode in a Brand New Season

March 06, 2014

Cineflix’s long-running series Mayday marks a major milestone with the airing of the 100th episode on March 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel Canada.

The landmark episode, titled “Speed Trap”, investigates the 1971 mid-air collision between Hughes Airwest Flight 706 and a F-4 Phantom fighter jet. Hughes Airwest is owned by billionaire aviator Howard Hughes, and as the accident attracts intense public attention, investigators are under enormous pressure to figure out why the planes collided. Military investigators join forces with the NTSB to uncover the truth about what happened, and in the process discover a dangerous flaw in America’s air transportation system.

“Our hundredth episode features the high-profile crash between a commercial and military aircraft, and the exhaustive investigation that followed,” said Alex Bystram, Executive Producer. “The lessons learned in the devastating mid-air collision helped force changes to air traffic control that protect passengers to this day.”

Since its debut in 2003, Mayday has taken viewers behind the scenes of the world’s most catastrophic aviation disasters in search of the clues that can prevent tragedy from happening again. Based on cockpit voice recorders, accident reports, and insider accounts by the investigators themselves, every episode also features state-of-the-art CGI and gripping reenactments.

With a total of 109 episodes, 11 new episodes of Mayday will air through April 2014.

Highlights from the first episodes of the new season of Mayday include:

“Lost in Translation” - Friday, March 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

Shortly after taking off from Zurich Airport, Crossair Flight 498 banks sharply to the right and spirals to the ground, killing everyone on board.  Investigators suspect cell phone interference might have affected the flight. But the discovery of drugs in the captain’s flight bag suggests a more alarming explanation for the crash.

“Disaster on the Potomac” - Friday, March 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

Moments after taking off from Washington National Airport, Air Florida Flight 90 plunges into the frozen Potomac River and sinks below the ice. Investigators suspect ice on the wings. But with limited information, they turn to an ingenious experiment to uncover the full explanation for the crash.

 “Queens Catastrophe” - Friday, March 28 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

Just after taking off from New York’s JFK Airport, American Airlines Flight 587 falls out of the sky and crashes into a densely populated neighbourhood in Queens, New York. Just two months after the events of 9/11, the disaster ignites fears that America is once again under attack by terrorists. FBI agents join a team of NTSB investigators to determine what happened.

Mayday is a Cineflix (Mayday 13) Inc. production, in association with Discovery Channel Canada.
