Director, Human Resources (Montreal)

The Company

Cineflix Media creates, produces, and distributes popular factual and scripted content for the global market with operations in Montreal, Toronto, New York, London, and Dublin.  Producing approximately 200 hours of network-defining programming per year across a wide range of genres, and with a growing catalogue of 4,500 hours, Cineflix is behind some of TV’s most highly-rated brands.

The Role

Cineflix is currently looking for a Director, Human Resources, based out of our Montreal office. This is a full-time, maternity leave replacement contract of approximately 13 months.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director, Human Resources guides and manages the provision of Human Resources services, policies, and programs for the Company’s Corporate, Production and Distribution divisions. Overseeing a team of 3 in Montreal and Toronto with dotted line reports for HR tasks in NY, London and Dublin.


  • Maintain, design and implement HR processes, policies and procedures in line with organizational requirements. Advise managers and employees on the interpretation of personnel policies, compensation and benefit programs;
  • Maintain employment compliance with existing and new legislation in Canada, US, UK and Ireland; anticipate new legislation; advise management on needed actions;
  • Maintain positive relationship with all internal and external stakeholders;
  • Manage recruitment and selection process for senior positions, performance management and improvement processes, Human Resources budgets and special projects by estimating, forecasting and anticipating requirements;
  • Negotiate employment agreements, amendments and renewals, mediate labor disputes and grievances and provide advice on employee and labor relations;
  • Provide the HR team with guidance and mentorship;
  • Supervise HR team for: employment processing, payroll, employee welfare and motivation, training, records management, health and safety, vacation processing, HRIS, production contracts, internships, company events.

 Candidate Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years as a generalist and 4 years in a leadership role required.
  • Broad knowledge base and deep experience in multiple human resource areas including staffing, employee and labor relations, legislation, group benefits, HR programs, compensation, etc. 
  • Exposure to international employment legislation and benefits - specifically in the US, UK and Ireland - will be a definite asset.
  • Excellent team building, communication, and organizational management skills
  • Proficient at analyzing data and pinpointing issues and solutions.
  • HR Certification and previous experience in a media environment will be considered an asset.

  • Able to work to deadlines and adapt to changing conditions
  • Demonstrate an understanding of personalities and behavioural styles in order to work collaboratively with a variety of people and to make informed decision around resourcing, reporting structures and relationships.
  • The ability to inspire confidence of senior management through timely delivery of information and plans.  
  • Works independently of COO, but consults where appropriate
  • Familiar with best HR practices and experienced in coaching managers through this and leading where necessary.
  • Capable communication skills - handles complex and difficult situations with thought and confidence.
